So there has been alot of news going on about saving the planet. We need to recycle this and make sure that we aren't going to places in our cars unnecessarily (I'm a bad speller by the way). So I have started to so my part in saving the planet. I have started with the following.
1. Turning off lights, the TV, radio, whatever electrical item is turned in a room that Tim and I are not in.
*When I was younger my father would always yell at me for leaving lights and stuff on when we weren't around. At some point he decided that we were going to pay him for every light that we left on. He would always yell, "Who's upstairs?" and when neither my sister or I answered he would yell, "Someone owes me a quarter." He wasn't very strict on this ordeal, at least not when we lived on base because as we all know the base pays for everything except the phone and cable. When we finally moved into our own house the crack down began. The other thing that he always yelled was, "Close the door, we aren't heating the street!" And in turn we would either go outside to play with our friends or they would come in.
*Once I was married I came to quickly realize that you had to pay for stuff like electricity, water, the trash man, etc. So all those things that my father yelled at me came rushing back all at once. I would make sure lights were off and that our thermostat was at a reasonable temperature and I would turn the heat/AC on at the last possible second where it basically became almost unbearable to live in.
2. Trying to recycle everything to include plastic bottles, soda cans, glass of any sort and whatever could be recycled.
*At the current moment the commissary is selling these to help save the environment from the plastic bag delima. The biggest challenge that I'm finding with the bags for life thing is remembering to put them back in the car. Did you know that you can get more food in one of those bags than you can in those plastic bags? You can fit 3 plastic bags full of food into one of those green bags, no joke!
3. Keeping the tires in my car inflated to the correct psi.
*Did you know that if you keep your tires inflated the the correct psi you can better your gas mileage by 3.3 miles? How? If your tired are at the correct psi it takes less energy to move your car after it has been sitting still.
4. Doing my errands on one day and in a clockwise way. (In reality it is different for me but the clockwise way for those of you in the states)
*Obviously if you do all your errands in one day the rest of the days can be spent not driving your car around letting off all those bad things that cars do. Now I say the clockwise thing because it was found that if you do your errands in a clockwise manner than your will save on how much gas you use because you have the opportunity to turn right on red. UPS did the study and found that over a year by use this stagety in driving that they saved 56,000 gallons of gas. It might have been more but I'm not sure of the exact number, but none the less, that is still a big number.
There are a few other things that I'm thinking about doing that I just learned about like changing to cloth napkin from paper, cutting my shower time by 2 minutes, only buying what I'm going to eat, and I know there are other things but I have to read my magazine again.
Now I was going to say a whole lot more but I'm still sitting in TLF and I have lost my train of thought cause well it isn't like I have a nice quiet place to think. But I think I have gotten my point slightly across. Just wanted to give you something to think about.
